[S-series] Kay’s Instant Macaroni comfort food on a cold (air-con) day!

Hi,

At the time of writing this, it was a Sunday, our official lazy day when me and Claire would lie around the apartment like slugs. We made it a point to not make any plans and not leave the house as much as possible. So our meals will be easy stuff for lazy people.

So at lunch time, we were both quite hungry, even lazing around can make people hungry you know. So I decided to try Kay’s Instant Macaroni.

I open up my miserably stocked fridge and see lots of canned drinks and snacks, and the only ‘proper’ food item left was a half eaten pack of sliced mushrooms. And I decided that its going into the Macaroni. Good thing about instant food is that you can mix and match any ingredient you can find in your fridge, savoury food items I mean, can’t imagine mixing chocolate rice or Jelly beans into the soup right.

Kay’s Instant Macaroni looks like a pack of instant noodles. But macaroni is westerner’s food, its a type of pasta from italy. But you don’t see Italians eat curry flavour or tom yum flavour? Don’t even mention ikan bilis LOL. Those are all familiar sounding names you hear around our home country, bring this to Italy and you’re bringing a taste of home with you… yeah.

Kay’s a local brand, so you can expect all its food items goes through safety checks enforced by our Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA). Support local brands people! They are usually reliable. Like how the macaroni aren’t ‘waxed’ like some instant noodles, ensuring our health and doesn’t compromise on quality. They are ad with 100% durum semolina from Italy and are vacuum packed so they have a shelf-life of 1 year.

Ok back to cooking.

I chose the curry flavour and tom yum flavour, according to the cooking instructions, all I need is just water and a fire. No need salt or put the cooked pasta through cold water like those packs of pasta you can buy at your local supermarket. Its so simple! being hungry, I went to it right away. Steps as follows:

  1. Emptying the pack and soup mix into a pot of boiling water.
  2. Let it simmer for 3 minutes with gentle stirring.
  3. Serve!

I must say, the 3 minutes cooking time is rather amazing when you compare to the average ~8 minutes cooking time of regular pasta.

And its done!

Pale looking pasta with spicy soup and mushrooms. Yeah I added mushrooms to the macaroni. We tasted it and thought its really interesting! I mean, ok it tasted like instant noodles but its macaroni you know? To be honest this is the first time I had instant macaroni. I went on to cook my tom yum flavour macaroni.

Tasty! I feel they are comfort food like potato chips, only its hot-food, unless you cook your potato chips.. Its simple, easy to stomach and tasty too. For people who just don’t have the time to whip up a good meal, this would suffice. It took like what, 3 minutes to cook it? And just add in whatever you wanna add into the pot and you’ll have your complete meal.

Only thing I don’t really like is the macaroni lacks the usual chewiness unlike the regular pastas. But that’s why its easy to swallow for me who had achalasia and now have a disabled esophagus, I don’t choke on it at all.

You can get them at Sheng Siong at $3.20 for a 3 x 80g pack. Soon other leading supermarkets will have them too. Lucky me I’ve got a Sheng Siong Supermarket in my estate. You can also check out their website here: http://www.3kays.com.sg/

I’m gonna retreat back into my air-con room and finish my bowl of macaroni now.

Cheers people.

Simon
