I had the privilege to go to Bay Hotel for a lunch buffet.

‘SINGAPORE FOOD STORY’ Weekend Buffet Lunch
Every Saturday & Sunday, 12pm to 3pm
Adult: $42 ++, Child (6yrs to 12yrs): $20 ++
(Children below 6 yrs dine for free with every paying adult, subject to maximum of 2 children per table)

Titled ‘Singapore Food Story’ because its NDP season again when everyone feels more patriotic and become more concerned about our national identity temporarily… This is offered at the Street 50 restaurant as a Lunch Buffet because after the meal everybody will rush to our National Stadium for the NDP right? So considerate..

The Street 50 Restaurant is trying to tell us the Singapore Story through our mish-mash of food from different cultures, the harmonious combination different cultures like teh mixed with halia (ginger) or Chinese mix with Ang Mo become Banana kind of thing.. Ok maybe my combinations sucks.. But you get the idea right? It’s a boiling cauldron of cultures, heritages and yet it creates such a wonderful mixed child of flavours that every true blue Singaporean will appreciate. Like give a mosquito some water and they lay eggs, suits us perfectly.

Well without further ado, let’s see some pictures:

The standard staple food in any local themed buffet, simple to make and easy to ingest.

The Ayam Lemak Chilli Padi is one of the highlights, and rightfully so. Its tasty and the chicken is tender, unlike most buffet spreads where the chickens were overcooked.

And this prata house styled Fish curry taste like heaven when matched with some naan below

Butter Chicken and sambal la-la looks like its from some local BBQ hawker and tastes as good too!

The unpretentious Beef Rendang, this is arguably the best dish in the restaurant. It looks ‘normal’ but normal is deceiving. The spiciness and sweetness were balanced perfectly. Not too oily and the fragrance enveloped the room once you open the cover of this darkened gold in a pot.

Other food that a Singaporean will be familiar with are as follows:

Interestingly there are fresh seafood served as well, this is almost to tell us of our fishermen village roots before we were discovered and colonized.

I especially like this Sugarcane Prawn Skewers. Very tasty appetizer have me licking the skewer looking for a new lip piercing (splinters alert!)

Some gado-gado perhaps? Adopted from one of our neighbours.

and of course we need to celebrate our nonya friends in the form of authentic nonya kuehs. Perfect for desserts, I personally cannot resist anything green (pandan/coconut) here, too good.

And you think for the price, this is it? No…

Check out the BBQ pit outside!

Its got the usual BBQ food like squid, corn and such. On top of that there are a couple more live stations:

Laksa station! How can we ever forget laksa?

And a Crepe station, with ice cream and berries. This would excite kiddy food loving girls like my wife.

There is pulut hitam with coconut cream which I liked a lot and you can wash all the food down with bandung and Teh or Kopi Tarik

If you’re looking for an adult drink instead of those mild and weak drinks, they also have a running promo now:

Entertainer App ‘1 for 1’ Adult Weekend Buffet Lunch
DBS Credit / Debit Cards 15% off Adult Weekend Buffet Lunch
Free Flow Draught Beer, Wines & Juices @ $28++ per Adult
UOB Dining Treats: ‘1 for 1’ Free Flow Draught Beer, Wines & Juices with Adult Weekend Buffet Lunch purchase

This is a preview thing and the spread wasn’t too shabby, considering the affordable pricing, I would say its a great idea to bring someone craving for local food. This is like a one stop place for all things local.

My 1st round. Testing first so I took a bit of everything.

Wife’s spread, health conscious but still want to eat, so take a bit a bit only.

2nd round shall have no pictures because I’m too busy downing the beef rendang, so screw the camera and pictures.

I think it would be better to have fried hokkien mee and ome other stuff but I noticed there were no pork served. I supposed its a ‘no pork no lard’ restaurant. Many local goodies might need such ingredients so its omitted. I ate till I couldn’t walk and ended up chilling for a bit inside, enjoying the nice ambience and watching my wife picking desserts.

Do note that this is a Weekend Lunch Buffet deal, but if you’re looking for a nice dinner buffet, Street 50 also offers:
