Hi
I’m sure many of you already knew Claire and I live in Sengkang.
Living in such close proximity to Seletar Aerospace Park, its amazing that this is only the 2nd time we visit the ‘Oval’ in the area.
The Oval @ Seletar as its commonly called, is a fancy name for the area dotted with colonial bungalows that houses hipster joints. And we were always just too lazy to get out there to act like hipsters. Earlier this year (yes, long overdue post this is),is an exception, we decided to visit Wildseed Cafe & Bar at the Summer House to see if we can get some instagram-worthy photos from the place.
So here we are, thinking we could try their Weekend Brunch. Claire was full of expectations when she suggested that we come here for brunch. Only its not Brunch time now.. Its available from 10am to 3pm and we arrived at 3.15pm…… Bummer.
Then I saw Ramen, I’m like why is there ramen in a cafe like this? Apparently its some temporary ‘Pop-Up’ stall by the Summer House’s chef de cuisine‘s take of Ramen. We decided to just go ahead to try that, after the disappointment of not getting the brunch.
I thought ramen is just ramen you know, a quick, salty Japanese fare that would be sure to satisfy our sad tummies. But Lo and Behold… Its not what we would’ve expected… Check them out..
Look at them, those aren’t noodles! And are those caramelized onions?? Not to mention the tiny portion. Its like fine dining portion.. Oh well its someone’s take on the ramen, lets just open our mouth and open our hearts and try it.
Erm… I don’t know what to say, because I really can’t shake the expectation on good old ramen you see. You still have to give the chef credit for inventing this dish. Those noodles are not exactly noodles. They are like clumps of cooked noodle dough. Coming in clumps means you can eat it with a spoon, that’s what we did. I think it tastes interesting, its got all the saltiness of a Japanese Ramen but then it tasted like a European country styled dish with its onions, chives and s drizzle of parmesan. The entirety of the dish is a fusion of sorts, unfortunately it left me confused on my palate.. I applaud the effort though, and I would certainly like to see more new stuff the chefs create in future. But this one I have to pass. Since my post is kinda outdated, I think they discontinued the dish already. Let’s wait for more then.
The hot and iced lattes are from Wildseed, and well the presentation was good, but then… I still preferred the likes of Nylon Coffee, Stranger’s Reunion, Highlander Coffee and Old Hen’s, just to name… a few.. Those that I named, made very good flat whites and lattes IMO.
And with that, I shall end my post. Maybe the hip cafes in the Oval @ Seletar are all over hyped, that explains my overly zealous expectations, which also explains why I feel a slight disappointment, taking into consideration the items were all rather costly.. Oh well that’s that. I might still visit the area, but would think twice about patronizing the cafes.
